ICE South West Future Leaders Alex Buley and Meg Ginsberg will be tackling the Bath and Bristol Railway Marathon on Sunday 20th October 2024.

Recognising that some in our industry may be facing tough times, the pair will be aiming to raise money and awareness for the ICE Benevolent Fund.

The route showcases the rich heritage of the railway, guiding marathon participants via the historic Avon Valley Railway station at Bitton and onward to Bristol.

Along the way, runners will pass restored signal boxes and charming stations at Warmley and Mangotsfield.

Naturally, no engineering-themed challenge would be complete without a tunnel, and this route features the impressive Staple Hill Tunnel – a 450-metre-long passage that once accommodated two railway lines.

Meg Training

In a double-whammy of enthusiasm and dedication, the go-getting team will be completing several park runs as part of their training for the big event. In the process, they will visit three Smeaton sites to commemorate the Smeaton 300 anniversary.

With a self-confessed inability to “sit still”, both participants found this challenge a fitting way to give back to the Civil Engineering community and make a positive impact. When asked about their feelings regarding their upcoming feat, they shared:

“YES, LET’S DO THIS!!”

“[I’m] excited, nervous, and ready for a challenge”.

7 September – Plymouth Central Park Run (Plymouth – PL3 4HQ)

14 September – Exeter Riverside Park Run (Exeter – EX2 8DU)
